Quillan's cellar-season list

Eight browser games that age
as slowly as the oak casks

Once the last apples are pressed, the casks need months of quiet and Quillan needs something for the long evenings. So he keeps eight free browser games that mature the same unhurried way: a Stone Age camp, a park of hatched dinosaurs, two medieval realms, an empire spread across planets and moons, a moonlit feud between vampires and werewolves, and two sports clubs to bring up from the youth ranks. None of them needs installing first.

First pick of the season

Stonies

Stone Age settlement builder · Farm, town & zoo

Quillan's orchard began with a single tree and a great deal of patience, which is why Stonies heads his list. You set a Stone Age tribe to gather, craft and research, keep on top of the survival chores and widen the camp as each discovery lands, climbing the technology ladder one rung at a time rather than in a rush.

Good for
Builders who enjoy survival chores and slow, steady progress.

Seven more to lay down for the winter

Dinosaur Park: Primeval Zoo key artFarm, town & zoo

Dinosaur Park: Primeval Zoo

Fossil-to-enclosure dinosaur park

Fossils come out of the ground and, with a little care, dinosaurs hatch from them. You raise an enclosure to suit each species, keep the park running smoothly for the visitors who come to stare, and put research into the next creature on the list.

  • Short check-ins or a longer building spell
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Quillan’s notes: whose cup of tea it is, and where to start

Good for: Anyone who wants a zoo sim with prehistoric residents.

Your first session
  1. Hatch the fossils you already hold before digging for more.
  2. Build each enclosure to suit the species going into it.
  3. Keep research running towards the next dinosaur.

Travian Kingdoms key artStrategy & war

Travian Kingdoms

Kingdom strategy with kings and governors

Every player here is either a king or a governor, and each role carries its own duties. You found fresh villages, run trade between them and help your side keep its ground through a round that runs for months, much like a cask left alone to mature.

  • A handful of brief look-ins each day
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Quillan’s notes: whose cup of tea it is, and where to start

Good for: Strategists who enjoy a clear role inside an alliance.

Your first session
  1. Decide early whether you would rather rule as king or serve as governor.
  2. Settle a second village once the first runs smoothly.
  3. Keep trade routes busy so no storehouse overflows.

Imperia Online key artStrategy & war

Imperia Online

Medieval empire in real time

A village grows into an empire in real time as you upgrade economic, military and university buildings. Once the walls are sound, catapults and trebuchets roll out to besiege rivals, and a beaten neighbour can be made your vassal rather than simply swept aside.

  • Frequent short checks on the build queues
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Quillan’s notes: whose cup of tea it is, and where to start

Good for: Strategists who want conquest to carry lasting consequences.

Your first session
  1. Upgrade economic buildings before anything military.
  2. Point university research at what you will need next.
  3. Scout a rival thoroughly before the siege engines roll.

Astro Empires

Galactic strategy on one shared map

On clear frosty nights above the orchard, Quillan likes to picture this one: bases scattered across planets and moons on a single shared map. You grow an empire, build fleets and join a guild for coordinated player-versus-player wars between the stars.

  • Short visits to queue fleets, longer for planned battles
  • Desktop browser
Quillan’s notes: whose cup of tea it is, and where to start

Good for: Players who want an enormous shared map to carve up with friends.

Your first session
  1. Build up your first base before spreading to new worlds.
  2. Join a guild early; lone empires make easy targets.
  3. Keep fleets close to home until you know the map.

BiteFight key artRole-play & adventure

BiteFight

Gothic horror role-play

When the moon hangs over the cellar arch, this is the one Quillan reaches for. You take a side in a long-running war of vampires against werewolves, head out on timed hunts to grow stronger, challenge players from the opposing faction and climb a persistent ranking.

  • Quick visits between hunts
  • Desktop browser
Quillan’s notes: whose cup of tea it is, and where to start

Good for: Players after a darker, simpler role-playing game.

Your first session
  1. Choose vampire or werewolf with care; your side decides your rivals.
  2. Send your character hunting before taking on other players.
  3. Check the ranking to find opponents close to your own strength.

Sokker key artSport & management

Sokker

Football club raised through its academy

A football club grown from the roots up, the way a young tree is trained along its wires. The youth academy feeds players into the squad, tactics are set out in their own dedicated system, and a pair of league matches each week is shown in full 3D, with international fixtures on top.

  • Quick visits before and after each fixture
  • Desktop browser
Quillan’s notes: whose cup of tea it is, and where to start

Good for: Managers who like raising players from their very first season.

Your first session
  1. Look through the youth academy before buying anyone.
  2. Set up one simple tactic, then refine it week by week.
  3. Invest in the ground gradually as the club grows.

ManagerZone key artSport & management

ManagerZone

Veteran multi-sport club manager

Few web-based manager games have been running longer, and the depth shows. You juggle the club budget, the draft and the training plan, ring the ground with clinics and shops, replay recorded matches to read the next opponent, and cast your vote in federations of fellow managers.

  • A few minutes most days, longer before key fixtures
  • Desktop browser

Every one of the eight is free to play, though each sells optional in-game purchases.

01

Nothing to pay at the cellar door

Opening an account costs nothing on any of the eight, and a whole winter of play needs no spending at all; the tribe, the park, the kingdoms, the fleets, the hunter and the clubs arrive complete.

Each studio also runs a store of hurry-ups and cosmetic trimmings. Plenty of long-serving players leave it unvisited, and on a family computer the account settings can usually cap or block spending.

02

Tapping a fresh game

Every button on this rack leads off to the game's own official home in a new tab. An email address is all the sign-up there needs, and before long a camp, a park, a village, a base, a hunter or a club is waiting with your name on it.

All eight start newcomers off with a tutorial. Stay with it to the final step, since it lays out how the menus and the resources fit together far faster than guesswork.

03

Short visits, long seasons

Nothing on the list stops when you shut the tab: the tribe gathers, eggs hatch, troops march, fleets cross the map and matches kick off. A glance over breakfast and another once the press is washed down is usually plenty.

Keep the short visits for gathering up, queueing builds and checking in with allies or league rivals. Hold the weighty choices for a quiet evening: a new village, a siege, a youngster's first match or the next rung of the technology ladder.

04

Keep your login under lock and key

Each studio keeps its own players' logins, so a password should only ever be typed on that studio's published address. Use a different password per game, as you would a different key per cellar door, and accept any second sign-in step a studio puts on offer.

No genuine helper from a studio will ever request your password. A stranger trading free premium bonuses for sign-in details is angling to steal the whole account, so do not reply, and flag the message to the studio.

Why these eight earned a rack in the cellar

  • Desktop and laptop browsers open all eight as they are, meaning the first frosty evening begins without an installer bar crawling across the screen.
  • Registering is free across the rack, and each game stays whole and playable for people who never once open its shop.
  • All of them keep growing between visits: the tribe gathers, fleets travel, clubs train and villages build while the tab is shut.
  • Every one is a long-running game with a settled community, which suits a winter that lasts until the blossom comes back.

No. Every game on the rack runs in a computer browser; an official phone app exists for half of them, purely as an extra.

No. Signing up is free across the list, the complete game is open without spending, and in-game purchases stay strictly optional.

No. Each one is built and kept running by an independent studio; the buttons on this page only lead to that studio's official site.

No. With a different studio behind each game, every one needs its own free registration.

Travian Kingdoms, Imperia Online, Stonies and Dinosaur Park: Primeval Zoo each have an official app beside the browser version. Sokker, ManagerZone, BiteFight and Astro Empires are recorded here as browser-only, so a desktop or laptop is their natural home.
